Aluminium – emission-free smelting! A world first.

We have succeeded in smelting aluminium without producing any emissions, meaning it is completely free of harmful gases, nitrogen oxides and other pollutants produced in conventional combustion processes. This is another step towards a green metal industry.
How did we achieve this?
By using a non-flammable hydrogen gas mixture and our newly developed two-stage process. Through targeted hydrogen conversion and the use of NEOXID Group H₂ catalysts, we achieve:

  • 850°C exhaust gas temperature
  • 110 kW power
  • No CO₂. No nitrogen oxides. No soot.

This makes aluminium smelting sustainable and climate-neutral, representing a real milestone for the energy transition in the materials sector.

As part of the “OptiProGRessAl” project funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection, the final tests were successfully carried out at our Neuss facility in close collaboration with our project partners from the Technical University of Braunschweig.
Developing suitable hydrogen burners for aluminium melting was one of the project’s four goals – and it has already set a new standard.
